A Decade of Toronto Rock Concerts:
300 Snaps into the crowd

Since 2001 photographer David Waldman has documented Toronto rock audiences, lighting the venues and frenzied crowds with a signature technique of pre-installed wireless flashes. You can view selected snapshots of what he caught in over 800 concerts at this historic installation entitled AKA Kid With Camera, which displays nearly 300 images from Waldman’s vast archive. It is a veritable chronicle of the movements, faces and moments from a decade of continuous, compulsive concert-going. Waldman’s odyssey through the surging indie music scene has yielded a treasure trove of pictures memorializing the famous and the unknown, the dazed and confused.  Look hard and you may see faces you know, or people you wish you could forget.

Waldman started prowling the music scene while still in high school (circa 2001). Armed at the outset with a primitive digital camera he became a fixture of the punk and indie-rock scene, honing his craft in smoky caverns and performance spaces, rubbing shoulders and head-banging with the people he was shooting. Instantly given the nick-name "Kid With Camera", his website was recognized from early on as the only place to see photos from fan and artist run concerts, years before everybody showed up with a camera in their hand.

Waldman, a self-taught photographer, has spent the past ten years immersed in documenting live concerts. These photos serve as a backdrop to his life in the crowd. Though his preference remains for dim, available light in the manner of cinema vérité or classic reportage, over time he has developed the remote flash technique which he says allows him “to control and sculpt the space.” He belongs in the ranks of Gonzo-style photojournalists, who inject a personal perspective and autobiographical details into their work, shunning the pretension of purported objectivity.

David Waldman has released a series of printed zines,  personal journals of his life as a music fan. He continues to work as a freelance photo-journalist and portrait photographer serving for exceptional talents like Fucked Up, Japanther, Aids Wolf and One Hundred Dollars.
